Mo Li Hua (Op. 8)

for Orchestra

Year of Composition: 2021
Duration: 5 minutes
Premiere: September 2022 ; St. Etheldreda's Church, Hatfield House

Composer's Notes:

I composed my orchestral piece “Mo Li Hua” last summer. The piece is based on a Chinese folk melody, of the same name, which I use as the main theme, developing it through different musical textures and rich orchestral colours. Towards the middle of the piece, I introduce a second theme, which is based on a Scottish dance theme. This theme is heavy and exciting, providing an exciting contrast to the light and energetic character of the main theme. The piece had its premiere in September 2022, as part of the Hatfield House Chamber Music Festival. During this concert, the piece was interpreted into a visual work of art, by the fantastic illustrator and storyteller James Mayhew, who vividly depicted the fusion between the two musical themes.
